Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A porous sheet, for use in galvanic batteries, comprises colloidal particles of lime and dispersed cellulose fibres bonded together with an organic binder insoluble in an alkaline solution. The binder may be hydroxyethylcellulose, precooked starch, polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl formal or polyacrylamide, made insoluble by cross-linking e.g. with formaldehyde, glyoxal or alphahydroxyadipaldehyde. The sheet may be made by preparing a colloidal dispersion of lime in water, blending this with a dispersion of cellulose fibres in water and with the binder, casting the resulting slurry into sheet form, and drying.
