Abstract
1,258,191. Air cushion vehicles. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 20 Jan., 1970 [21 Jan., 1969], No. 3299/69. Heading B7K. [Also in Division G3] Variations in pressure within a fluid pressure cushion 8 supporting a load bearing platform 1 are sensed by at least one pure fluid device 13 the output from which actuates pressure control means 31 in the fluid supply 11 to the cushion. The cushion is formed by a diaphragm 2 of natural rubber, neoprene or polyurethane secured at its centre 3 and periphery 4 to the platform. Convolutions concentric to the central fixing provide a number of concentric annular air spaces above the diaphragm when it is retracted. When a pressure fluctuation is sensed in the space above the diaphragm by a pitot tube 15 a pressure signal is transmitted through line 18 and lines 21, 22 to control nozzles 23, 24 of the pure fluid device. A capacity 25 causes a delay in the arrival of the signal at the nozzle 24 so that the flow from the power nozzle 28 is deflected against a bias pressure from a nozzle 27 into an outlet 32 to cause the means 31 to reduce the supply 11. The system may be used to suppress pressure oscillations in the cushion of a hover vehicle. A three-stage proportional amplifier may have its first stage connected to two pads of a four-pad hover pallet and its remaining stages each connected to one of the other two pads. In a further embodiment, the pure fluid device does not sense pressure changes within the cushion but is connected to a jet discharging on to a spring mass responsive to oscillation of the pallet. The system may also be used in conjunction with a vehicle having a supporting cushion divided into separate compartments or a number of separate support cushions.
