Abstract
1,258,128. Cellular polyamide fibres. E.I. DU FONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 1 April, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 17117/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Fibres formed by melt-spinning a polycarbonamide composition containing kaolinite and phenylphosphinate, e.g. at 300-335‹ C., have numerous internal voids and small surface bumps of 1-3 Ám, which are elongated in the direction of the fibre axis, and have subdued surface lustre and reduced frictional properties. If the spinning is performed using dried flake, a further increase in polymer M.W. may be catalysed by the phenylphosphinate. The polycarbonamide is prepared in the presence of (a) an aqueous dispersion of kaolinite with particle size 0À2-5 Ám, there being 0À3-17% wt. of kaolinite and (b) 0À01-0À5% wt. of phenyl phosphinic acid or a salt thereof, the percentages being based on wt. of polycarbonamide. The salt is of the acid and an alkali metal or bis-(4- aminocyclohexyl) - methane. The polycarbonamide contains units derived from (1) bis-(4- aminocyclohexyl)methane containing at least 45% wt. of the trans-trans isomer, and optionally another diamine, and (2) linear dicarboxylic acid(s) containing 9-16 C atoms, and optionally other dicarboxylic acid(s). In (1) optional diamines include hexamethylenediamine. In (2) the acid may have 9-16 C atoms, e.g. azelaic, sebacic, dodecanedioic, and hexadecanedioic; optional acids include adipic and isophthalic acids, (a) may contain an inorganic deflocculant, e.g. Na or K silicate. The kaolinite acts as a delustrant, (b) is preferably added in an aqueous solution. (b) stabilizes the composition against the thermal degradation otherwise caused by the presence of (a). The polymerization mass may contain 1 mole per cent of CH 3 COOH.
