Associating - apparatus; cutting and perforating apparatus; delivery apparatus; feeding webs; signature gatherers and the like; stapling and stitching devices.-A method of associating together a number of differently coloured or printed tickets or the like and forming them into packets or books in one operation consists in unwinding strips of tickets from a number of rolls and forwarding the strips in superposed relation to stapling or stitching and serving devices. The strips 1 pass from the rolls A round one or more guide-rollers 4 and the composite web B is fed between side guides 10, Fig. 2, under a knife 31 to a stapling or stitching device 34 of any suitable construction. A guard strip 5 prevents the strips slipping off the rollers 4 and a bar 7 and co-acting cam-operated brake block 8 is provided to hold the web B during the cutting and stapling operation. The strip B is fed intermittingly by pawls 11 pivoted to sleeves 12 slidable on rods 13 and the pawls and sleeves are operated by a sliding bracket 20 provided with jaws 19 engaging arms 11<1> of the pawls. During the forward movement of the bracket 20, the pawls are turned into feeding engagement with the web B and in the return movement are lifted clear of the web. The bracket 20 is operatively connected by side pins 20<1> with bell-cranks 22, 24, fixed to a cross-shaft 23. The bell-crank 22 is connected by a link 25 to a slotted lever 27 keyed to a shaft 28 provided with a hand-lever 29. An adjustable stop 30 limits the upward throw of the lever 29 and consequently the feed of the web B. The bell-crank 24 is provided with a handle 24<2> by which the feed of a longer length of web B may be effected by first disconnecting the shaft 23 from operative connexion to the handle 29. The downward movement of the handle 29 operates the knife 31 through a link 32 and operates the stapling-device by engaging the spring arm 34<1>, and may also operate a device for perforating the stapled packet. The packets are delivered by a device which flips them aside comprising an arm 38, Figs. 2 and 5, carried by a curved spring 35 carrying a, roller 37 engaging a rod 39 connected to the bell-crank 24 so as to be reciprocated vertically. The rod 39 normally holds the spring 35 in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5, but is provided with a bent portion adapted to permit the spring to move inwardly as shown in broken lines to deliver the packet D. The handle 29 may be operated by the hand or foot of the operator or by steam, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric power.
