Abstract

1,257,986. Reflectors. GRIMES MFG. CO. 28 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 21639/69. Heading F4R. In a projector lamp comprising a bulb and an image inverting reflector for directing light on to a surface in a predetermined pattern the reflector 35 is divided into a plurality of arcuate discrete segments of a circularly symmetrical reflector wherein each of these segments is angularly offset with respect to a central axis of the reflector to displace the light so that the areas of light contributed by each reflector segment on the surface overlie to form a composite pattern 30 with straight sides, the number of sides depending upon the number of reflector segments. The pattern shape is retained at points beyond the image inversion point farther from that at which it is formed. The reflector segments may be segments of a paraboloid, or an ellipsoid, and the light source is positioned at an off-focus position to produce the image-inversion. The lamp may be formed as a sealed beam lamp, Fig. 11, not shown. In a further embodiment the reflector may have its sides lopped off to form a square shape, in which case the composite pattern may form a rectangular area of light. By variation of the amount and degree of area overlap lamps may be constructed for various purposes such as spotlights, car headlights, aircraft lights &c. Reflectors of the type described may also be used for ultra-violet, infra-red or very short wave radio waves.
