Abstract

1,257,930. Propeller shrouds. AVIATION SUPPLY, MINISTER OF. 4 Dec., 1969 [6 Dec., 1968], No. 58176/68. Heading B7V. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a ducted propeller or the like, the propeller 2 is surrounded by an annular shroud member 3 which is provided with circumferentially-extending apertures 5 through which a fluid is discharged in a downstream direction over the exterior or interior surface of the shroud to control the boundary layer. Apertures 5 may alternatively be provided on the inner periphery of the shroud. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the apertures 5 are provided with spring flaps 8 which are opened by flow of fluid through the apertures. It is also stated that flow over the external surface of the shroud member may be controlled to constrict the outlet flow to vary the propeller thrust.
