Phosphides.-In a method of introducing a volatile element such as phosphorus into a metal such as copper, the volatile element is heated in a retort 3 adjustably mounted above and heated by a vessel 2 containing the molten metal, and the vapour from the retort passes through a pipe 4 submerged in the molten metal.
