Abstract

1,257,843. Phenol-formaldehyde fibres. CARBORUNDUM CO. 19 Sept., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 46284/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B1-B2] Phenol-formaldehyde condensation products, including resoles and novolacs are formed into fibres which are cured, before or after the fibres are woven, knitted, felted, batted, wound on a support or formed into paper-like medium with the addition of phenolic binder. In an example, specified proportions of phenol, formaldehyde, water and H 2 SO 4 are reacted forming a novolac which is dried by vacuum distillation, washed, and melted in an apertured vessel. A fibre of novolac is drawn off through the aperture, which is 1À9 mm. in dia., at 3000 feet per minute, and wound on to a graphite or polypropylene spool. The fibre is 12 microns in diameter, elliptical in section and brittle. The fibre is cured by immersing the loaded spool in a specified mixture of HCl and aqueous formaldehyde solution, which is progressively heated to 100‹ C. over several hours. Physical and chemical properties of the cured fibres are exemplified. Specification 1,256,924 is referred to.
