Abstract

1,257,656. Coatings. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 21 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968 (3)], No. 20187/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Electrical resistors are coated with a flame resistant composition comprising an at least partially hydrolysed tetraalkyl orthosilicate, aluminium oxide and a suspension agent and containing silica as crystalline SiO 2 having a particle size of 100-325 mesh (U.S. standard= 0.044 to 0.149 mm<SP>2</SP>). The composition may also contain an inorganic pigment, e.g. TiO 2 and/or a filler. The TiO 2 and suspension agent may be added to the composition as a dry particulate solid having agglomerates >1Á. The coating, on curing, preferably contains (on an oxide basis, by wt) <0.05% Na, <0.05%K, <0.01 Li, <0.001% Cs and <0.001% Rb. The composition may contain up to 20% by wt. of a solvent, e.g. isopropanol. The orthosilicate which may be present at 5-55% by wt. of the total may be tetraethyl orthosilicate. Al 2 O 3 may comprise 4-95 % by wt. of the composition. The suspension agent, e.g. an alkyl ammonium montmorillonite may be present at 0.1-2% and the crystalline SiO 2 at 1-48% by wt. of the total. In a preferred embodiment a three layer coating is applied. The first layer comprises a highly inorganic (i.e. containing >50% of SiO 2 units) silicon resin, the second coating is as set out above and the third coating comprises on at least partially hydrolysed tetraalkyl orthosilicate, a highly inorganic silicone resin and suspended resinous particles, e.g. of a fluorocarbon resin. Examples relate to the coating of a tin oxide coated glass resistor.
