Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a first resin which is a flexible resin binder, a second resin, which is a partially cured amine/formaldehyde resin, finely divided crystalline silica as a pigment and volatile inert solvent for the first and second resins, the silica having a maximum particle size below 20 microns and being present in sufficient amount to render the mixed resin layer visually opaque and to completely cover the base surface to which it is applied. Specified first resins are cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate and polymers of compounds containing the <FORM:1072123/C3/1> group, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinyl butyral, vinyl butyral/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers, vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymers, and polymers and copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic esters. Specified second resins are condensates of formaldehyde with urea, 2,4,6-triamino pyrimidine, 2-mercapto - 4,6 - diaminopyrimidine, melamine or cyanurtrihydrazide. Specified silicas are ground sand and quartz. Specified solvents are 2-methoxy-ethanol and methyl isobutyl ketone. The compositions may contain a curing catalyst for the aminoplast resin, e.g. stannic chloride, aluminium sulphate, methyl or ethyl phosphoric acid, salicylic acid, sulphosalicylic acid, ammonium chloride or aluminium chloride; and additional pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and alumina, may also be present; and the compositions may be used for coating flexible sheet materials as described in Specification 1,072,122. Examples describe compositions comprising (I to IV) vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymers, urea/formaldehyde resins, ground sand or quartz and 2-methoxyethanol, together with (V to XII) powdered silica gel, titanium dioxide and stannic chloride.
