Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a flexible film-forming resin, a solvent therefor, an amine/formaldehyde resin and a finely divided crystalline silica of maximum particle size below 20 microns. Specified resins are cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate, and polymers of compounds containing the <FORM:1072122/C3/1> group, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers, polyvinyl butyral, vinyl butyral/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers, vinyl acetate/crotanic acid copolymers, and polymers and copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters. Specified silicas are ground sand and quartz. The amine/formaldehyde resin may be a condensate of formaldehyde with urea, 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine, 2 - mercapto - 4,6 - diaminopyrimidine, melamine or cyanurtrihydrazide, or ether thereof, e.g. with butanol. A curing catalyst for the aminoplast, e.g. stannic chloride, aluminium sulphate, methyl or ethyl phosphoric acid, salicylic acid, sulphosalicylic acid, ammonium chloride or aluminium chloride, may also be present. Specified solvents are 2-methoxyethanol and methyl isobutyl ketone. Additional pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and alumina, may be present, and the compositions may be applied to film bases, cloths and tracing linens to provide sheet material suitable for pencil drafting. Examples describe coating compositions comprising (I to IV) vinyl acetate/crotanic acid copolymer, urea/formaldehyde resin, ground sand or quartz and 2-methoxyethanol, together with (V to XII) powdered silica gel, titanium dioxide and stannic chloride.ALSO:Substrates such as cellulose derivative and synthetic resin films and glass and cotton fabrics, are coated with compositions comprising a flexible resin binder, and amine/formaldehyde resin and a sufficient proportion of finely divided crystalline silica or particle size below 20 microns maximum dimension to render the resin layer virtually opaque and to completely cover the base layer. The flexible resin may be cellulose acetate or a vinyl or acrylic resin. Specified substrates are cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate/propionate, nylon, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyterephthalate esters, polyester filled glass or cotton cloth and tracing linens. The silica may be ground and or quartz. Curing catalysts for the amine/formaldehyde resin, e.g. acids and acidic salts, may also be present. Examples describe the coating of polyethylene terephthalate films with compositions comprising (I-IV) vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymers, urea/ formaldehyde resin, ground sand or quartz and 2-methoxyethanol, together with (V-XII) powdered silica gel, titanium dioxide and stannic chloride.
