Abstract

In welding a nipple 7 to a steam drum or accumulator, the nipple is located by a centring and backing ring 12 which has shouldered spigots 2, 3 of diameters D1, D2 corresponding to bores D1<SP>1</SP>, D21, respectively of the drum or accumulator and the nipple, and has an external groove 1 of semi-circular or polygonal crosssection to permit the weld to extend through the joint root. After welding, the centring ring may be removed by milling.
