Abstract

A fibre-optic element has a wide-angle field of view provided by a spherical or partspherical lens 13 mounted on a bundle 10 of fibres 11 the field of view being limited only by the numerical aperture of the fibres. The lens can be fused, or bonded with a substance such as cellulose caprate, to the fibres 11. The elements distortion is illustrated by the barrel-shaped image, Fig.4 (not shown), of a square plate which has mutually perpendicular lines (20). The image has the same definition at the edges as at the centre. To reduce the stray light from the end of the bundle 10 farthest from the lens 13 a diaphragm may be used. The element may be used to view with correct object/image area relationship, the interior of a spherical cavity. The fibres 11 may each be surrounded by material to provide extra-mural absorption.
