In a recirculating ball-typescrew-and-nut gear, the means for returning balls 14a from one end to the other of a portion of the groove 11 in the nut 10 comprises two; inserts 16 in radial; bores 14 in the nut, the inserts having scoops 19 which depend into the groove 12 of the screw 13 on opposite sides of a single crest 20 of the screw thread and face in opposite circumferential directions, the scoops being connected by a return passage defined by guide surfaces 21 of the inserts 16, the side walls of a slot 15 in the nut between the apertures 14, and the crest 20 of the screw thread. The inserts 16 have D-shaped heads 17 the flats of which interengage to prevent rotation of the inserts. A spring clip (not shown) retains the inserts 16.
