In a process for preparing compounds (I) and its function derivatives. wherein the pairs A 1 and A 2 on one benzene ring may be the same or different from the pairs A 1 and A 2 on the other benzene ring and each pair is OM and H on -COJ; H and -OCD= CHCOOR<SP>2</SP>; OCOCOR<SP>11</SP> and H or -COCH 3 ; or A 1 and A 2 together form the chains -CO-CH=C(D)-O- or -COCH 2 -CH(D)-O- (where M is H, an alk. metal cation or a lower alkyl group; J is a group CH 3 , OR<SP>2</SP>, CH 2 COD or CH=CHD, R<SP>2</SP> is H or 1-10 C alkyl, D is COOR<SP>2</SP> or a group V convertible thereto and R<SP>11</SP> is OH or a group convertible thereto); X is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring, straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon chain which chain may be interrupted by one or more heterocyclic or carbocyclic rings, carbonyl groups, 0, S, substituted S, NH, or substituted NH; P, Q, P<SP>1</SP> and Q<SP>1</SP> may be the same or different and may be H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkyl or alkoxy, the groups T and T<SP>1</SP> are removed from compounds (II) where T and T<SP>1</SP> are the same or different and are carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups or their functional derivatives, tert.-butyl, allyl or an alpha-unsaturated alkyl group, a protected amino group, halogen, nitro or cyano. Furthermore the process includes the step of converting A 1 and A 2 in compounds where one or neither of the pairs A 1 and A 2 form a chain -CO-CH=C(COOH)-O- or a derivative thereof, into such a chain. T and T<SP>1</SP> may be removed by decarboxylation, treatment with strong acids, hydrolysis and diazotization, heating with steam or water, reduction and diazotization and hydrolysis and decarboxylation according to the value of T and T<SP>1</SP>. A 1 and A 2 may be condensed to form a chain by reaction with a dehydrating agent. The following intermediates are prepared: 1,5 - bis - (3 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxycarbonylphenoxy) pentane, and 1,5-bis-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenoxy) pentane; 1,3-bis-(2-acetyl-3-hydroxy - 6 - iodophenoxy) - 2 - hydroxy propane and 1,3 - bis - (2 - ethoxycarbonyl - 6 - iodochromon - 5 - yloxy) - 2 - hydroxy propane.
