Abstract
1,256,597. Controlling solvent refining. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 2 July, 1969, No. 33316/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C5] A solvent refining process in which a lubricating oil stock introduced at 1 is contacted in packed tower 6 with a solvent introduced at 10 is controlled by a method comprising generating first, second, third, fourth and fifth signals respectively responsive to the specific gravity of the feedstock, its viscosity, its refractive index, its flash point, and the desired viscosity of the refined oil, combining these signals manually or by means of computer 50 to produce two further signals which are used to control (1) the proportion of solvent to feedstock fed to the tower; by controlling operation of flow proportioner 54, and (2) the temperature of the extract mix leaving the tower, by controlling the rate of flow of coolant through 16-17-18. In other embodiments, instead of or in addition to the cooling coil shown, the temperature gradient in the tower may be produced by introducing feed at a lower temperature than solvent, by introducing a cold reflux stream or by withdrawing a side-stream of liquid from the tower, cooling it and re-introducing it. Solvents exemplified are furfural and N-methyl-2-pyrolidone.
