Abstract

1336197 Controlling solvent refining process TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 Nov 1971 [8 Dec 1970] 54709/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division C5] Apparatus for controlling the refining of charge oil in a process in which the oil is treated with a solvent, for example furfural in tower 5 on packing 26 to yield raffinate in line 30 and extract mix in line 48 and the solvent is separated from the two product streams in strippers 40, 49 respectively to provide refined waxy oil and extract oil comprises means 8 and 17-20 for sensing characteristics of the charge oil, means 8A, 8B for sensing characteristics of the refined waxy oil and extract oil respectively, means 8C for sensing a characteristic of the solvent stream, all those means providing corresponding signals, means for providing "value" signals corresponding to the economic values of the charge oil and of the refined and extract oils, and control means for receiving the signals from the sensing means and the value signal means and processing them to produce control signals for the refining, for example signals controlling the charge oil flow rate (E1) and extract oil temperature (E12) to give maximum profit yields. Charge oil characteristics sensed may be (8), flow rate; (17), refractive index; (18) flash point; (19), viscosity; (20), gravity. Sensing means 8A, 8B, 8C may measure flow rate, means 17A the refractive index of the refined waxy oil. At start up, the charge oil flow rate and extract oil temperature are controlled using signals dependent on predicted values of a process condition characteristic A pred and desired refined oil quality a pred, the predicted A pred and a pred being calculated from charge oil properties and solvent flow rate and passed through switches 186, 166 respectively to computers 160, 162, 185 and summing device 161 for calculation of the control signals. After a predetermined time, measured values of characteristics of the product stream are used to calculate "actual" A act and a act and switches 186, 166 pass these instead of the predicted values to produce the control signals.
