Abstract

1,256,529. Expanding tobacco. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. 24 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 61451/68. Heading A2C. Tobacco plant parts such as the midribs or stems, are contacted with water or steam under conditions such that the plant parts increase in volume by at least 50%; freezing the water-containing expanded product, and freeze-drying in a zone at a pressure below 5 mm. Hg. absolute. The tobacco plant parts are of a size sufficiently large so that they will not pass through a 16 U.S. standard mesh screen. Preferably the tobacco plant parts are contacted with water or steam at 0‹-130‹C., frozen at a temperature of -20‹C. or below, the product being freeze dried at a temperature of 0‹ to 60‹C. The water used to contact the tobacco parts, may contain glycerine or enzyme systems.
