Abstract
1,256,495. Welding by fusion. VICKERS Ltd. 24 March, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 20034/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] -In electron beam welding, the workpiece in a vacuumis separated from the ambient atmosphere by being enclosed in a metal box 1 the top wall 3 of which comprises a sealed access accommodating operation upon 'the workpiece by an external electron gun 21, said access being movable in any direction across the wall. Said sealed and movable access is provided by a first circular cover plate 6 rotatable about the axis of, and sealed to, an-aperture 4 in the wall 3, a second circular cover plate 12 rotatable about the axis of, and sealed to, an aperture 10 in, and eccentrically of, the first cover plate, and a sealing device 18 between the gun and-an access aperture 16 which is aligned with the gun and is provided in, and eccentrically of, the second cover plate. Preferably, the axes 17, 5 of the access aperture and the first cover plate are equidistant from the axis 11 of the second cover plate so that the gun may take up any position within the circle generated by the axis 17 in its outermost position. Thrust -bearings 13, 7 and flexible sealing-rings 15, 9 are provided between the second and the first cover plates and between the first cover plate and the wall. The sealing device 18 comprising flexible sealing rings 19, 20 is provided around the access aperture 16 to receive, with relative rotational freedom, the outlet end of the -gun which latter -may be supported and moved by gantry means (not shown). The gun may, alternatively, be moved by driving thecover plates. Front and side walls of the box are provided respectively with a loading door and an evacuating duct 22.
