1,256,429. Electromagnetic mixing. SPETSIALNOE KONSTRUKTORSKOE BJURO MAGNITNOI GIDRODINAMIKI AN LATVIISKOI SSR. 15 May, 1969, No. 24867/69. Heading B1C. Apparatus for mixing a conductive liquid 6, e.g. mercury, with a reagent 7 comprises a container 1, an inductor 5 capable of producing a travelling magnetic field the direction of which can be reversed, and a discharge conduit 4 lying at least partly in the zone of action of the inductor. In one direction the travelling field mixes the mercury and reagent and in the other discharges at least part of it through the discharge conduit. Part of the conduit may be defined by a partition 2 parallel to the bottom 3 of the vessel and spaced from one of the side walls, and which may be ferromagnetic; the bottom of the vessel may be inclined, see Fig. 2 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the mercury is circulated during mixing through a pipe 12, is returned to the vessel as droplets by passage through a perforated flow divider 16 (see also Fig. 4, not shown) and descends an incline 15 which prolongs contact time. The discharge pipe has a hydraulic seal 18 (see also Fig. 5, not shown) which prevents discharge of the reagent; the working portions 11, 13 of the discharge and circulation pipes are rectangular. In a modification (see Fig. 6, not shown) the mercury is passed twice through the zone of action of the inductor during mixing and discharge, with increased flow rate.
