Abstract
1,256,185. Hop picking. FILPER CORP. 2 Feb., 1970, No. 4959/70. Heading A1F. A hop picking machine comprises two pairs of opposed substantially vertical picking belts 24, each pair arranged to form a downwardly converging wedge shaped vine receiving space 22 and mounted in endless chains 30 so that the front of the belt is slightly higher than the rear, and having outwardly projecting U or V shaped picking fingers 34. The belts move so that their inner runs provide a cooperative rearward movement. Two rubber faced contra rotating rollers 56 arranged in a vertical narrow V configuration grip the vine stem and move the vine forwardly faster than the speed of machine travel on the ground, so holding the vine against, removal from the ground and progressively laying the stripped vine on the ground longitudinal with the vine low under the machine. A cutting and positioning unit 74 mounted above and forward of belts 24 comprises a bifurcated base 76 supporting two inwardly resiliently biased moving belts 108 gripping and drawing the vine tops rearwardly onto a reciprocating cutter bar 74, and then into the receiving end of space 22. A longitudinal axis roller 74 is mounted behind cutter bar 126 acting as a guide and supporting for trellis wire 72. Hops removed by the belts 24 are transported on conveyors 38, 36 and 48. Belts 24, rollers 56 and cutting unit 74 are power driven by hydraulic motors.
