Abstract
1,255,893. Orrery. E. V. BYERS. 19 April, 1971 [29 Jan., 1970], No. 4262/70. Heading G5G. An orrery comprises a central sun-carrying member 11, a plurality of annular planet-carrying members 14-20 nested one within another and individually rotatable about the central member, and a driving mechanism for driving the annular members at different rotational speeds, which mechanism comprises three sets of friction wheels 26-32 rotatable, respectively about three axes 23-25, wherein each set consists of a wheel for each annular member, each said wheel engages and supports a circular track 33-39 on the associated annular member, a plurality of the wheels in each set having different diameters and the tracks for them are concentric and have differing diameters and are disposed at appropriately different levels, and at least one of the sets is driven. All the sets may be driven from a motor 40 via gearwheels. The two outer friction wheels 31, 32 are driven at a reduced speed through reduction gearing. One planet 16<SP>1</SP> is provided with a moon 49 which revolves around it through the action of a further friction wheel contacting a fixed track 53. The apparatus is enclosed by a transparent dome, and sockets 59 for electric lamp bulbs are provided.
