Abstract

1,255,726. Butenediols. TOYO SODA MFG. CO. Ltd. 20 June, 1969 [24 June, 1968; 2 July, 1968], No. 31328/69. Heading C2C. 2-Butene- 1,4-diol is prepared by hydrolysing 1,4-dichloro-2-butene or a mixture of dichlorobutenes in the presence of water and a formate of a Group 1 A or IIA metal (e.g. Na, K, Ca) at an elevated temperature below 150‹ C. If copper, iron or zinc or compounds thereof are present 3,4-dichloro-1-butene is also largely converted to the 1,4-diol. Otherwise it remains substantially unreacted. Some 3 -butene- 1,2- diol may be present in the product. The starting material may be the product from vapour phase chlorination of butadiene.
