Abstract

1,255,648. Combustion systems. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Oct. 21, 1969 [Oct. 22, 1968], No.49973/68. Heading F1J and F1L. A duct burning system comprises a duct 6, a fuel injection manifold 11 disposed in the duct and a flame stabilizing gutter 12 disposed downstream of the manifold and aerodynamically in line therewith, the manifold having a first plurality of orifices 13 facing upstream and dimensioned for injecting the major portion of the fuel supplied to the manifold into the duct. A downstream-facing channel member 10 is disposed adjacent the manifold upstream thereof and into which the major portion of the fuel is injected. The manifold has a second plurality of orifices 14 facing substantially radially and dimensioned to inject the remaining portion of the fuel into the duct. The invention is described with reference to re-heat equipment of a gas turbine jet engine but is also applicable to combustion equipment in the by-pass duct of a gas turbine by-pass type jet engine. In the embodiment the orifices 14 are directed radially inwardly towards the centre of the duct. Fuel discharged from the orifices 13 is reversed in direction by the channel member 10 and flows as a "curtain" around the manifold 11. At high rates of fuel-flow, fuel injected radially inwardly through the orifices 14 can penetrate the fuel curtain and pass towards the centre of the duct thus avoiding the possibility of "rich extinction". At low rates of fuel-flow the fuel injected through orifices 14 does not penetrate the curtain and this avoids the possibility of "weak extinction".
