A tank stabilization system of a ship com- prises reservoirs 15, 16 containing liquid on opposite sides of the ship and connected by a passage 17 of adjustable uniform cross-sectional area. Sensor 88 senses the roll period of the ship and controls actuator 91 to adjust the crosssectional area of the passage so that in operation the period of movement of the liquid between the reservoirs is in excess of the period of roll of the ship.
