Abstract
1,255,277. Launching ships. VEROLME MACHINEFABRIEK IJSSELMONDE N.V. 4 Dec., 1969 [4 Dec., 1968], No. 69164/69. Heading B7S. A launching assembly for a ship 1 on a slipway 6 comprises a slide frame or cradle 3 supporting the ship and slidably mounted on greased stationary shootways 5, the cradle being held in position prior to launching by a plurality of rods 13 coupled by threaded sleeves or tumbuckles 14, 15 to lugs 11, 12 pivotably connected by pins 9, 10 to brackets 7, 8, an explosive charge being located within one or both sleeve chambers 17 to break the sleeves for launching. The sleeves are reduced in thickness at 16 to facilitate breakage. The unthreaded portion of rod 13 is of reduced thickness and the rod is of soft steel to facilitate breakage of the rod, in case some of the explosive charges do not explode, the rod strength being such that a small percentage of the total number of rods, e.g. 20%, when acting alone, will not hold the ship. The rod material also permits stretching of the rods to accommodate different stresses along the cradle. The rods also may be adjusted by sleeves 14, 15 to accommodate different stresses. Twin detonator leads may be used for each explosive charge to ensure firing.
