Abstract

[Also in Division C2] A detergent composition comprises at least one ester of an α#-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid with a hydroxy-group containing non-ionic surface active agent which contains at least one free carboxylic group and which has been sulphonated across the double bond, wherein the α,#-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid is an acid material obtained by heating an alkaline earth metal citrate at 250‹ to 400‹ C. for a period of time until an increase in titratable alkalinity of the reaction mixture is observed and hydrolysing the product thus obtained, before or after sulphonation thereof to the corresponding acid material together with one or more builders and/or fillers, or if the composition is liquid together with an aqueous medium. In an example calcium citrate was pyrolysed at 250- 350‹ C. and the product after hydrolysis and sulphonation was reacted with an ethoxylated mixture of C 11-15 secondary alcohols. This product was mixed with sodium tripolyphosphate, borate, silicate and sulphate to give a powder composition. Non-ionic surface-active compounds may also be present and produce a synergistic effect, preferably ethoxylated C 8-24 aliphatic alcohols are used.
