Abstract

1,254,442. Surface finishing. INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL SERVICES Ltd. 12 Sept., 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 27870/68. Heading B3D. A workpiece is treated with an abrasive or polishing substance in a reciprocating vessel 10 whose maximum vertical speed in one direction is greater than that in the other. Ceramic or metallic abrasive, rouge, etc., may be charged into the vessel 10 with a batch of workpieces, or an abrasive blast may enter the vessel 10. Wet or dry treatment may be performed, and vacuum may be applied to the vessel 10 to induce the abrasive blast and/or remove detritus, etc., while a number of separately chargeable compartments in the vessel 10 may allow separate simultaneous processes. The vessel 10 is reciprocated on guide rods 18 by means (not shown) such as a pneumatic ram connected to a ring 21, the downward velocity being greater than the upward velocity, while a rubber pad 24 on a base 23 acts as a shock absorber. The velocities may be controlled by a piston attached to the vessel 10 sliding in a hydraulic cylinder (not shown), a valve in a hydraulic by-pass allowing more rapid flow from bottom to top of the cylinder than vice versa. Alternatively, the actual path of vessel movement may be generally helical, achieved e.g. by imparting a helical form to the guide rods 18.
