Abstract
125,439. Roxburgh, A. B., Sanderson, T., and Sanderson, F. H. July 25, 1916. Retort furnaces; charging and discharging.-A charcoal retort a, which may be vertical or inclined, is externally heated, so that there is a gradual rise in temperature downwards to a zone of maximum heat, and fed with wood which descends by gravity and substantially fills the cross-section of the retort; the charging and discharging of the retort are effected so that the retort is worked continuously. Fig. 1 shows a vertical cast-iron retort a, in a firebrick setting b and heated by means of gas burners d arranged round a flue c about the lower and intermediate parts of the retort. Wood is fed into the retort from a hopper f having a cover g and provided with a valve h for controlling the wood supply. At the bottom of the retort is a discharge and cooling chamber i, of about half the capacity of the hopper f; this chamber is provided with a cover j for excluding air from the chamber and a valve k for regulating the discharge of charcoal. An air jacket l, with apertures l<1> for admitting air, surrounds the chamber i; the hot air from this chamber passes through apertures l<2> into the flue c. Water or steam may be injected into the cham. ber i.
