Abstract

Polish compositions comprise a substantially water-clear aqueous dispersion, or an aqueous dispersion clarifiable to a substantially waterclear appearance upon addition of a base, such dispersion having a pH of at least 7 and containing dispersed therein (a) a film-forming, emulsion copolymer of at least one α,#-monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with one or more other monoethylenically unsaturated comonomers, such copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity, measured in tetra-hydrofuran at 20‹ C., of 0À1-0À7 dl/g. and (b) a water-soluble polyvalent metal compound which can dissociate to provide polyvalent metal ions in the composition. The copolymer preferably includes units of an acrylate or methacrylate ester of benzyl alcohol, phenol or a saturated monohydric aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol, and may also include units of hydrophilic monomers such as amides of (meth)acrylic acid, hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylates and amino-containing unsaturated ethers, thioethers, esters or amides, and units of other monomers such as styrene, vinyl toluene, (meth)acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. The polyvalent metal compound may be an oxide, hydroxide or salt (inorganic or organic), or a complex thereof with ammonia or an amine; chelates of polyvalent metals with amino acids are also suitable; preferred metal cations are zinc and cadmium. The compositions may additionally contain other components such as waxes, alkali-soluble resins, surfactants, dyes, pigments and plasticizers (e.g. tributoxyethyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, glycol monoethyl ethers and diethylene glycol). Waxes used may be of vegetable, animal, synthetic (e.g. polyethylene) and/or mineral origin (many examples are given). Suitable alkali-soluble resins include shellac, Manila gum, Loba gum, styrene-acrylic acid resins, styrene-maleic anhydride resins, alkali-soluble alkyds and rosin-maleic anhydride adducts esterified with polyhydric alcohols.
