Abstract

1,254,025. Pipe and rod joints. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 23 June, 1970 [13 Aug., 1969], No. 40420/69. Heading F2G. [Also in Division H2] An arrangement for sealing a cable member 3 coaxially within a gland member 1 comprises a preformed sleeve 6 of shrinkable material coaxially surrounding the members 1, 3 and having a narrow end 7 shrunk on to and adhesively sealed to part of the cable 3, and a wider end 8 shrunk on to and adhesively sealed to at least part of the gland 1. A sealing arrangement according to the invention may be made by filling the space between the members 1, 3 with a hardenable adhesive 4, applying adhesive material to the external surfaces of said members 1 and 3 which are to be sealed to the sleeve 6, positioning the sleeve 6, and heat shrinking it into intimate contact with the coated surfaces. The internal surface of the sleeve 6 may also be coated with adhesive prior to shrinking. A clamp 10, which may be secured to the memberl, may be placed around the narrow end 7 of the sleeve 6 and separated therefrom with packing material 11. The sleeve 6 is preferably of an irradiated cross-linked plastics material (e.g. polyethylene) and may have narrower and wider portions prior to shrinking. The hardenable material 4 may be an epoxy resin. Where the cable 3 is plastics sheathed the surface within the member 1 and within narrow region 7 may be oxidized (e.g. by a flame) prior to assembling the joint.
