Abstract

1,253,758. Oxidation catalysts comprising rhodium or iridium. MONSANTO CO. 15 Aug., 1969 [15 Aug., 1968 (2)], No. 40883/69. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A catalyst system comprising a rhodium or iridium compound with an iodide promotor is used to prepare carboxylic acids by reacting ethylenically unsaturated compounds with carbon monoxide and water (see Division C2). The rhodium and iridium compounds may be complexes including the iodide and may be co-ordination compounds which include ligands and many are specified. The iodine may also be free iodine, hydrogen iodide, alkyl-or aryl iodide, and metal, ammonium, phosphonium, arsonium or stibonium iodide and may be incorporated in the first component or charged separately. Examples describe the use of catalysts prepared from rhodium and iridium chlorides with aqueous hydrogen iodide. Inert supports e.g. activated carbon (Examples 16 and 39), alundum, clays, alumina, silica-alumina and ceramics may also be present.
