Abstract

1,234,642. Platinum metal catalysts. MONSANTO CO. 5 April, 1968 [5 April, 1967; (3) 30 Jan., 1968], No. 59546/70. Divided out of 1,234,641. Heading B1E. A catalyst comprises an iridium, platinum, osmium or ruthenium component and a promoter substance which is iodine, hydriodic acid, or an organic iodide - the catalyst being either dispersed on a carrier or in solution in an alcohol having n carbon atoms, where n is 1 to 20, an acid having n+1 carbon atoms, the ester of said acid and said alcohol the diether of the said alcohol or a halide of the said alcohol. Many suitable salts and complexes of the noble metal components are specified, those preferred being coordination compounds of the noble metal, carbon monoxide, a halide and organo-nitrogen, organophosphorus, organoarsine and/or organostibine ligands. Several organic iodides are specified, the term including ammonium, phosphonium, arsonium and stibonium iodides. Carriers specified are pumice, alumina, silica, silicaalumina, magnesia, diatomaceous earth, bauxite, titania, zirconia, clays, attapulgite, magnesium silicate, silicon carbide, carbon, zeolites, solid foams and organic polymers.
