Abstract

1,253,666. Wrapping machines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Jan., 1970 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 49730/68. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] In a wrapping machine of the type in which the thermoplastic film being fed to the wrapping station of the machine, is coated with a recurring pattern of a heat-sealable normally solid composition (see Specification 1,220,754, Division B8), the heat sealable composition used melts below 150‹ C., has a melt viscosity of between 0À1 and 100 poises, an " open time " (see below) of less than 2 seconds and a seal strength of greater than 150 gm./inch, and contains 10 to 40% by wt. of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 15 to 40% bywt. of vinyl acetate and having a melt flow index determined by A.S.T.M. D1238-65T of between 1 and 1000, 60 to 40% by wt. of a wax or mixture of waxes, 25 to 35% by wt. of a tackifying resin, and a heat stabilizer and/or antioxidant. In the example, the thermoplastic film is biaxially oriented polypropylene and the heat-sealable composition comprises 30% by wt. of a paraffin wax, 30% by wt. of an ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer containing 28% by wt. of vinyl acetate, 39À95% by wt. of a wood rosin ester (tackifying resin) and 0À05% by wt. of butylated hydroxy toluene stabilizer. The open time is the time for which the heat-sealable composition remains tacky after it is applied to the film.
