Abstract

1,253,545. Buoyant pipes. UNIROYAL Ltd. 27 Aug., 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 26997/68. Heading F2P. A hose for loading and discharging oil on and from oil tankers is rendered floatable in sea when itself is full of sea water by a covering of materials which are not vulcanized after application to the hose. The covering may be of foamed natural or synthetic rubber or closed cell polyvinyl resin, e.g. an expanded copolymer of nitrile rubber and p.v.c. As shown, a hose 1, formed of plies of synthetic rubber, fabric and wire, is surrounded by three plies 3, 4 and 6 of natural rubber sponge, each ply being a helically wound strip of the sponge. The inner ply 3 is only applied adjacent the two ends of the pipe. Nitrile rubber cement is used between adjacent plies. A ply 5 of nylon fabric is located between plies 4 and 6. An outer ply 7 of either nylon fabric impregnated with p.v.c. and nitrile rubber, cured under infra-red heaters, or plain nylon coated with polyurethane or polyglycol is provided.
