Abstract

1,253,460. Substation apparatus. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 12 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 7668/69. Heading H4K. A telephone answering machine employs a magnetic tape on which incoming messages are recorded, each message occupying one of a plurality of tracks within the width of the tape. The incoming line is connected to a control (12) which causes a pre-recorded message to be transmitted and prepares the recorder for recording the callers message. In the system shown, the first track of tape 15 co-operates with fixed head 39 and carries the pre-recorded message. Head 16 can be indexed across the rest of the width of tape 15 by the pawl and ratchet arrangement shown. In operation, the tape is started and on its first rotation the prerecorded message is transmitted. In its second rotation the caller's message is recorded by head 16 and at the end of the loop, sensed at 37, the drive is stopped and electromagnet 32 is energized to align head 16 with the next track. To release the pawl and ratchet arrangement lever 26 is moved so that comer C contacts protrusion 27 and the head is returned in the direction of arrow D by spring 31. During recording or playback lever 26 is positioned so that either of edges A or B contact protrusion 27.
