Abstract
1409173 Magnetic tape reading devices H SOREL 9 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6621/73 Heading G5R To avoid an inoperative period when tape is being re-wound in a tape reading device, two tape assemblies 3, 103 are provided, having distinct tape drives, and one tape is rewound as the other tape is read. Each tape 1, 101 bears a metal marker 2, 102 at the start of the recording and the tapes are stopped when the marker on the tape being re-wound is detected at guides 12, 13 or 112, 113. The tape reels 14, 114 are driven by reversible motors 15, 115, the reels 4, 104 by motors 5, 105 through friction couplings 6, 106. A relay-operated motor control circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), provides automatic changeover of the transport direction when markers 2, 102 are detected, as well as transport in the same direction if required. When used as a telephone answering device, two further relays in the circuit are actuated, one when a call is received, the other when both tapes have been read to terminate the call. Movable pressure means 11, 111 press the tape being read against corresponding read/record head 9, 109, and erase heads 8, 108 are also provided.
