Abstract

1,253,386. Artificial wood. G. ESSER. 7 Oct., 1968, No. 45157/68. Heading G3N. A cellulose-containing component for bonding with one of more like cellulose-containing com-- ponents to produce an air and water vapour permeable cellulose-containing material comprises a component, e.g. wood chip or veneer, which has been impregnated only in. the cell membranes of at least some of the cells with a low molecular weight, water soluble, settable impregnating resin which has been set, and saturated at least at its outer surface with a second impregnating resin. This second impregnating 'resin ,is used in the bonding of the cellulose-containing components to form the finished material and may be the same as the first impregnating resin. In the first impregnating step the cell membranes may be impregnated with 5-10% by weight impregnating resin. The resins preferably employed are based on mono-nuclear phenol-alcohols, e.g'. dimethylol phenols or trimethylol phenols and are preferably neutral adjusted resins. The second impregnating resin may be reinforced by the addition of 3-5% by weight resorcinol. The component may be impregnated in the first impregnation either in the dry Or moist state, preferably by the immersion method involving a diffusion storage step. The setting may be carried out by "condensation" drying in conventional drying plants. The impregnation with the second impregnating resin can be carriad out immediately after drying the wood by lightly moistening of the surface with for example 40-60% solids content of the impregnation resin solution'. In an example the resin-treated veneers after the second treatment are stacked and pressed between contact sheets to form wood layers at a pressure of 6--8 kg./ cm<SP>2</SP> at a temperature Of 135-140‹ C., for 15-20 minutes.
