1,253,364. Induction motors; core constructions. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 23 June, 1969 [28 June, 1968], No. 30957/68. Heading H2A. In a three-phase squirrel cage induction motor of low shaft height, a portion of the outer periphery of the stator core is cut away, the adjacent sector of the internal stator periphery is unslotted, a diametrically opposite peripheral sector of approximately 180 degrees extent is formed with slots of uniform depth and the intermediate sectors are formed with slots of smaller depth. The cut-away portion 6 subtends an angle of between 50 and 90 degrees at the motor axis (80 degrees in Fig. 2) and the unslotted peripheral sector subtends at the axis an angle not greater than half that amount (20 degrees in Fig. 2). As opposed to a conventional 4 pole, three-phase motor having 36 slots occupied by 36 coils, 12 per phase, the motor of the invention omits three coils per phase, 21 of the remaining coils being placed in 21 slots 5 of uniform depth, and 12 half coils in 12 slots 5<SP>1</SP> half the depth of the slots 5, all of the coils being pitched 2/ 3 full pitch. Alternatively, a different number of coils may be omitted from the different phases, as long as the phases are wound to have the same total number of turns.
