Abstract
1,253,331. Paint composition. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 27 Feb., 1970 [1 March, 1969], No. 9557/70. Heading C4A. A paint composition comprises a metal dust pigment and a binder comprising an emulsion made from (a) an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution, (b) a water immiscible organic solvent having a boiling point of from 40‹ to 180‹ C. and (c) a hydrophobic finally divided absorptive substance dispersed therein in an amount of from 0À5 to 20% by weight. Preferably component (a) is sodium, potassium, or lithium silicate in which the molar ratio of alkali metal oxide to silicon dioxide is raised to between 1 : 4 or 1 : 8 by the addition of silica sol or gel. Component (b) crude aliphatic petrol fractions, aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, ketones or chlorinated hydrocarbons, used singly or in admixture and constitute 1 to 25%, and preferably 5 to 15% by weight of the binder. Alternatively solutions of synthetic polymers in these solvents may be used. The metal dust pigment may be finely divided aluminium, lead, copper and especially zinc in the proportion by weight to binder in the range 1 : 1 to 1 : 8 and preferably in the range 1 : 2 to 1 : 6. The alkali metal silicate may be stabilized by adding water soluble mono or poly quaternary organic ammonium bases or their chloride sulphate or nitrate salts, in which there is at least one hydroxyl group-free alkyl group attached to quaternary nitrogen, the alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms. A hardener, e.g. triglycidyl isocyanurate, is also added in which the epoxide content is over 14%, together with a water soluble amine with at least two active hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen atom, in which there are 0À6 to 1À1 equivalents of amine active hydrogens to 1 equivalent of isocyanurate epoxy oxygen. An emulsifier may also be incorporated.
