Abstract

1,253,059. Oxidizing stainless steel surfaces. GTE SYLVANIA Inc. Nov.1, 1968 [Nov.1, 1967], No.51991/68. Heading C7U. [Also in Division C1] A stainless steel surface is oxidized particularly for use in metal to glass seals by heating at 2050 to 2150‹ F. in a mixture of gases containing from 6 to 9 per cent of carbon dioxide and 5 to 10.5% of carbon monoxide. The oxide formed is a rhombohedral solid solution of ferric oxide and chromium sesquioxide. The gas mixture may be obtained by burning a natural gas containing methane, ethane, carbon monoxide and propane. As shown in Fig. 1, articles 22 in a boat 24 are pushed into a furnace 10, while cracked natural gas is fed in through a pipe 36. The exit end of the apparatus is cooled by a jacket 30. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) the articles are passed through the oven on an endless conveyer.
