Abstract
1,252,431. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. 30 Dec., 1968 [3 Jan., 1968], No. 404/68. Heading B7C. A method of building a pneumatic tyre comprises forming a plurality of tread elements 1 of unvulcanized rubber composition, each element having two end faces 6 and a concave surface and a convex surface, the convex surface being of substantially the same configuration as it will have in the finished moulded tyre, applying the elements around the radially-outer surface of a treadless tyre in circumferential end-to-end arrangement with the concave surface of each element in contact with said radially-outer surface and with the end faces of each element each touching an end face of an adjacent element to provide a complete tread, and moulding and vulcanizing the complete tyre. The concave surface has grooves and has a slightly-larger radius of curvature than that of said radiallyouter surface to prevent trapping of air. To assemble, the tyre is held in an indexing machine, and the elements are applied thereto individually by a jig holding an element by suction. Each element may include two traction lugs 2, and faces 6 may be inclined to form grooves 7. Specification 1,205,951 is referred to.
