Saturated, non-branched aliphatic or alicyclic sulphonic acids containing 6-30 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting the corresponding hydrocarbon with sulphur dioxide and elementary oxygen, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of copper as a catalyst in the form of the pure metal, an alloy, an oxide or a salt, the salt being of an inorganic or organic acid and the catalyst being either dissolved or dispersed in the hydrocarbon.
