A pure compound of the formula A x Z y in which A and Z are different elements selected from Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, and wherein at least one of A and Z are Fe, Co or Ni and wherein x and y are integers less than 5 is prepared by heating a reaction mixture which contains the elements A and Z together with the chloride, bromide or iodide of at least one of A and Z, said mixture containing at least 25% by weight of the halide. It is preferred that the halide used is the iodide. In a preferred embodiment, the mixture containing the halide may be prepared by heating a mixture of the elements and the appropriate halogen i.e. bromine, chlorine or iodine, in amounts such that a mixture containing the correct amount of halide with A and Z in the desired proportions is obtained. The heating is preferably performed in a closed system.
