Abstract
1,252,017. Making bolts; welding by fusion. STANDARD PRESSED STEEL CO. 18 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 60258/68. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a bolt or the like comprises providing a stud 10 having a threaded section 12 and a nut 20 for threaded engagement therewith, the thread system formed by the stud and nut having an asymmetric thread, engaging the stud and nut and rigidly uniting them by electron beam welding along selected mating surfaces of the threads of the stud and nut. Initially the stud and nut are mechanically worked by conventional equipment to the desired shapes and then heat-treated. After heat treatment the threads are formed on the stud and in the bore of the nut. The stud and nut are normally of stainless steel, but two different, compatible alloys may be used, the stud at least being of an alloy which develops high strength properties, either by the combination of mechanical working and heat treatment or by mechanical working alone. The weld seam 30 is circular and penetrates approximately one-third of the height of the nut, Fig. 3 (not shown). The thread depth of the section 12 may be less than that of the section 14.
