Abstract

1,251,848. Polymers of 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 30 May, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 27427/69. Heading C3P. Polymers of 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene having substantially trans-1,4-addition structure are prepared by polymerization in the presence of a catalyst comprising vanadium trichloride, a trialkyl aluminium (alkyl=C 1-12 aliphatic or alicyclic) and a tetrahydrocarbyl titanate (alkyl=C 1-18 ) or titanium triacetylacetonate, the mol ratio of trialkyl aluminium to vanadium chloride being 1 : 1 to 200 : 1, the mol ratio of tetrahydrocarbyl titanate to vanadium trichloride being 8 : 1 to 1 : 8 and the mol ratio of titanium triacetylacetonate to vanadium trichloride being 4 : 1 to 1 : 4, the trialkyl aluminium and the titanium compound being reacted in the presence of vanadium trichloride. The trialkyl aluminium is preferably triisopropyl aluminium or triisobutyl aluminium and the tetrahydrocarbyl titanate is preferably titanium triisopropoxide.
