A coke oven door or door plate 11 has a plurality of fixed protrusions 15 and/or fixed sockets on its inner-face adapted to engage sockets 25 and/or protrusions on a refractory liner 13, 19, so that the liner can be supported on the door or plate. Lugs 15 welded to the plate 11 engage cavities 25 in separate refractory sections each secured to an apertured backing plate 19 to which are welded U-shaped reinforcing bars 21.
