Abstract

A mine gallery is excavated using a machine having a cutting head comprising a pair of parallel discs 1 provided with picks and mounted on a driven shaft carried by a head 6, the distance between the discs being not greater than the radial distance between the points of the picks when in the most forward position during rotation of the discs and the end of the head 6, the machine being operated such that the discs make a plurality of cutting strokes across the face of the gallery in one direction, and then a plurality of strokes in the perpendicular direction, so that the face is cut into a plurality of cubes which can be sheared off. As described the depth of the first plurality of strokes is equal to the radial distance between the picks and member 6 while the depth of the second plurality of strokes may be the same depth, or twice the depth so that the head 6 bears against the cubes and shear them off. The head 6 is rotatably mounted on arm 13 pivoted to arm 12 carried by trunnion 11. Jacks are provided to pivot arm 13 about arm 12 when the latter rotates, the jacks being manually or automatically controlled so that the head 6 moves in straight lines. The planes in which the discs lie is adjusted and then maintained constant during a series of cutting strokes by means of timing chains connecting a pulley on the head 6 to an adjustable pulley on the trunnion 11 via freely rotatable pulleys on the pivot axis of arm 13 on arm 12. The trunnion 11 is mounted on a carriage 9 or on a cylinder longitudinally reciprocable on the chassis 7 of the machine. The machine may be mounted on tracks and may have jacks to connect it to anchoring bolts and to raise it off the ground.
