Abstract

125,092. Roe, A. V. May 8, 1916. Planes, construction of; aerostats, framework.- The wing-ribs, spars, or other members of aircraft, or the lattice girder-frames of air-ships, are constructed of upper and lower members connected together by struts and tension members formed of channel section and having forked ends riveted to the upper and lower members. In the form shown in Fig. 1, upper and lower members a., b, of greater depth than width and attached to the wing spars A, B, are connected together by struts e, f and tension members c, d and, for large-size wings, also by the other struts and tension members shown. The tension members are constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 from a stamping of light steel, aluminium, aluminium alloy, &c. of the form shown in. Fig. 5. The struts are of similar construction, with the addition of embossed ribs along the sides. The forked ends of the struts and tension members are secured to the members a, b by rivets or bolts. Short ribs consisting of upper members only may be arranged between ribs constructed as above described, the whole being connected to the usual front bar G, which is provided with V-shaped packing-blocks F. The members a, b may be further bound together by threads passing also through the covering-fabrics to prevent the ribs from moving sideways.
