In apparatus for measuring the damping coefficient Q of a specimen 3 (Fig. 4), the specimen is supported so that when it is struck it is capable of free decay vibrations, the vibrations being converted into an electrical signal the oscillations of which are counted in a counter 17 during the time taken for the amplitude of the oscillation to fall from A 0 to A 0 e-# where the amplitude of the signal is given by A = A 0 e-#fot/Q. Since when A = A 0 e<SP>-#</SP>, f 0 t/Q = 1 if the number of oscillations that have occurred is n = f 0 t, the count represents Q. The resonant frequency f 0 may also be measured by counting the number of oscillations in a fixed time interval determined for example by a time base 16. As described a magnetic pick-up 5 converts the vibrations to electrical form the electrical signal being initially attenuated by a factor e<SP>-#</SP> by a potential divider 9. When the attenuator output after rectification falls to a level Eg detected by a comparator 13 a bi-stable 14 enables a counter 70 to commence its count of the free decay vibrations and also switches a relay 10 so that the signal is fed unattenuated to the comparator. When the signal again falls to E 2 the count is terminated.
